Alabama’s health is among the worst in the nation and ranks 46th in obesity, 48th in diabetes, and 49th in cardiovascular disease. The goal of Live HealthSmart UAB is to advance good nutrition, physical activity, and preventive wellness through establishing partnerships with Alabama Communities, working through the extensive framework and drawing upon the expertise of the UAB Minority Health & Health Disparities Research Center. On behalf of Live HealthSmart UAB, the Science and Technology Honors Program branch of Live HealthSmart UAB is working to establish HealthSmart initiatives within the Honors college specifically to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst the younger population of Alabama to carry forward into the coming years. Though original plans were thwarted due to the pandemic, our group shifted our focus to specifically promoting alternative recipes and exercises through media platforms on UAB’s Televisions in the Hill Student Center, Campus Recreation Center, Residence Halls, and Honors College; generated QR codes were linked to specific videos and articles centered around dietary alternatives to traditional foods and in-home physical exercises modified to fit the traditional “college-lifestyle.” Due to budget constraints, the specific number of students who accessed websites through our QR code graphics were unable to be retrieved, however, our team has compiled information from previous Science and Technology Honors HealthSmart Committees, and our experiences during the pandemic, to craft goals and programming initiatives for the next committee(s) to pursue during 2021-2022 and beyond.
