Originally presented on February 8, 2022 as part of the Center for Teaching and Learning's Global Awareness Workshop series for UAB faculty.
Workshop Description:
As with any teaching experience, first impressions are crucial for establishing a positive relationship between mentors and mentees. When building relationships with international postdocs, there are unique considerations to keep in mind related to the varying ways in which the term “postdoc” is used around the world. This workshop will explain the importance of setting shared expectations for the postdoc experience early and will discuss strategies for doing this both during the interview processes and during onboarding. Furthermore, experts from the International Students and Scholars Services will join the workshop to share information about supporting your international postdoc through the visa process.
Description of the Global Awareness "Mentoring International Postdocs" series:
Developed in response to feedback from international postdocs and those working with them, this 3-part series will explore the “before, during, and after” of being an international postdoctoral scholar at UAB. Recommended for any mentor of a UAB international postdoc, this series will provide relevant information to support a mutually-beneficial work environment for international postdocs and for their American-born or internationally-born mentors.
