The Alabama Interfaith Refugee Partnership (ALIRP) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supporting refugees and asylum seekers through education, advocacy, and direct support. The purpose of this research was to evaluate current state-level political discourse to shape how ALIRP advocates for its partners.
A web search of Alabama-based newspapers was conducted using terms related to refugees and asylum-seekers. Content analysis was conducted on 18 articles. Word frequencies established content codes, text was read line for line identifying inductive codes, and codes were checked for their validity by a secondary coder.
Anti-resettlement rhetoric was more common than pro-resettlement rhetoric. The anti-refugee rhetoric in Alabama largely does not match the refugees resettled in the state which presents a challenge for ALIRP when advocating for the families they serve.
