Poster Title: Accepting the Challenge: Live HealthSmart Alabama Approaches to Physical Wellness and Nutrition to Transform Health
Abstract:
The UAB Grand Challenge “Healthy Alabama by 2030: Live HealthSmart” initiative is a comprehensive plan towards improving overall wellness and health of Alabama residents. The state’s national health rankings for obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease lie in the bottom ten nationwide, thereby focusing concern on the health disparities in vulnerable populations. Orchestration of programming events and remodeling infrastructure within Alabama districts will collectively change the paradigm. Solving complex health problems can begin simply through public education and accessible wellness screenings. Small-scale action is being conducted within the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus through future volunteerism and policymaking by forged partnerships in Birmingham and local communities. Potential student-led involvement in teaching farms or community gardens will expedite societal awareness and engagement. Service-learning opportunities may further apply student skills to solve Alabama problems. Strides toward organizations and nonprofits to receive a Live HealthSmart designation can better collaboration and action in the process. Propelling significant improvements in key health metrics over the next ten years will then employ an attainable quality of life for all Alabamians--beginning at UAB.
